Classical music can be surprising, exhilarating, dramatic, quirky, funny, captivating and comforting, sometimes all at the same time. Musicians, actors, comedians and podcasters from around the world are here to give you their personal recommendations. Sign up for a weekly email and listen to the full playlist.
We published an article highlighting 10 living black composers from the UK and the US whose music we’re listening to at the moment. There’s a Spotify playlist to accompany the article, featuring a piece by each of the composers mentioned plus a few extras. If you’re a black composer and would like one of your tracks included, get in touch by tweeting us @alterclassical.
We’ve also put together an article about 10 historical black composers from the 18th-21st centuries, including Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price and Julius Eastman (pictured). You can hear a track from each of these composers (with the exception of Julia Perry, whose music isn’t on Spotify) to give you a small taster of their musical language.
Before lockdown (hard to remember, granted, but we promise this time existed) we published a monthly events guide, recommending informal concerts and gigs in cool venues across the UK. As most events got cancelled, we transformed this into a monthly playlist so you can still get your monthly fix, even if from your sofa/bed/bath instead. We update this every month so hit the ‘follow’ button and stay tuned for new recommendations every month.
It had to be done (no? Just us?): a COVID-19th Century Music Playlist, which translates as 10 pieces written during the 19th century by a mix of male and female composers from around the world. Hannah Fiddy is a creative entrepreneur, developing new audiences for classical music. She has created and promoted numerous concerts outside of traditional spaces, including warehouses, pubs, clubs, museums, hospitals, prisons and even in Primark. Hannah is also an interviewer, writer and guest lecturer, and runs the Avon Chamber Choir in Bristol. In a past life she founded London Flashmob, producing quirky events from wedding proposals to cultural pranks for up to 1,000 people.
