Enter the immersive musical world of contemporary composer, performer and artist Meredith Monk. Rarely or never-before performed in the UK, her works derive their power from a belief in the voice as the most ancient and universal instrument we have; an instrument capable of conveying feelings we don’t have words to describe and connecting us with the deepest human energy. They contain little text, instead relying on the power of human sound alone (as well as the occasional other instrument) to convey meaning, movement, narrative and emotion.
These beautiful pieces of vocal ‘choreography’ will be combined with contemporary choral works by others including Eric Whitacre, Eriks Ēšenvalds and Radiohead (adapted for choir) that are similarly capable of exploring the range of vocal sound.
The Working Consort is a new group of accomplished singers who live and work in London but work as professionals in other disciplines. The group of 8 comes together for specific projects they are passionate about, focusing on close consort singing, ambitious repertoire, and creative performances. Building on the success of their debut concert, David Lang’s the little match girl passion, they are returning with a new programme to once again transport audiences into a new sound world and champion contemporary classical / cross-over music for voices.
