Part of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s French Concert Series, Prism is a new work for piano and electronics, complete with immersive lighting, that is a reimagining and exploration of 19th-century French composer Marie Jaell’s 1888 work Prisme.
Centring around Jaell’s Prisme, the piece considers her relationship with the piano as a virtuoso pianist, researcher and composer. The concept of the prism will be bought to life by prismatic lighting of the piano, which will be placed in conversation with electroacoustic material that offers different lenses to engage with Jaell’s work.
