For 50 years San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet – David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt and Paul Wiancko – has challenged and reimagined what a string quartet can be. Founded at a time when the form focussed on Western European traditions, Kronos has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the string quartet into a living art form, responding to the people and issues of our time.
Having commissioned over 1,000 works and arrangements, Kronos has received more than 40 awards, including three GRAMMYs; the Polar Music, Avery Fisher, and Edison Klassiek Oeuvre Prizes.
Honing in on five decades of material, this show will include performances of Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet, selections from revered albums like Pieces Of Africa and Nuevo, as well as pieces by George Crumb, Dumisani Maraire, Terry Riley, Peni Candra Rini, Alfred Schnittke and more.
