A celebration of music and musicians from Africa

A day devoted to celebrating music and musicians from Africa, as well those of African heritage, inspired and created by pianist Rebeca Omordia, whose initiative enjoyed its first emanation in 2019 and has attracted considerable support.

‘Bringing African classical music to the western audience was right from the start an endeavour meant to unravel the cultural diversity of the African continent, and to create a platform for African classical music to be performed.’ - Rebeca Omordia

  • The programme will feature works for flute by African composers from the West African School of Art Music with flautist Rowland Sutherland who enjoys an international career as a classical and jazz musician; and West African songs for traditional instruments, the Oja flute and percussion, performed by the African Cultural Group.

  • Pianist Rebeca Omordia is joined by Ubuntu Ensemble to perform works from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Sudan. The programme will also feature traditional songs for mandola with Algerian-born master of RAI music Abdelkader Saadoun.

  • South African choral ensemble Imbube Singers joins Lichfield Gospel Choir under Themba Mvula to perform African songs featuring Songs of Africa by Fred Onovwerosuoke and arrangements of traditional songs.
