A Sarod Celebration ~ Marylebone, London

  • Wigmore Hall 36 Wigmore Street London, England, W1U 2BP United Kingdom (map)

A celebration of the Indian classical tradition

A two-day celebration of three Wigmore Associate Artists and their colleagues, all leading exponents of the Indian classical tradition. Renowned the world over for their performances and recordings, Amjad Ali Khan and his sons have enjoyed extensive and long-term success, introducing through their profound musicianship and communicative abilities their invaluable heritage to generations of audiences.

  • The trio is joined by a third generation for a programme that includes a tribute to Gandhi with a song that sets a Bengali-Sanskrit poem from the 1909 novel Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.

  • Noted for their collaborations with other leading performers in many different genres, the Indian classical musicians are joined by the exceptional Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe – whose own wide-ranging interests extend well beyond the Western classical tradition – in a programme that includes folk music from different regions and states.

  • Here the sarod virtuoso reconnects with one of the UK’s finest chamber orchestras, Britten Sinfonia, which under the leadership of Jacqueline Shave has maintained an ongoing creative relationship with the Indian classical tradition and Amjad Ali Khan in particular.

  • Representing in this fascinating juxtaposition a cultural meeting-place, music from the Western Baroque tradition is placed side-by-side with pieces exemplifying the Indian classical tradition in this renewal of a partnership with the widely admired violinist Jennifer Pike.
